To block a website you need not configure any settings in your browser or router or switch , no need to play with a fire wall. You just have to follow these three simple steps. You can block any number of sites which are not good for children or you by this method. You can also block social networking sites like facebook, myspace by this method.
Step 1: First open run and type the following path.
You will find a file named as hosts. Open it with your notepad
for windows Vista and XP type C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
for Windows 2000 type C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
for Windows 98 and Melinium editions type C:\WINDOWS
or in XP you can directly open it by typing
notepad c:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Step 2: As you have opened the hosts file using a notepad you will find some matter at the last line you will find 127.0.0.1 localhost
just below that add
127.0.0.1 www.website.com
127.0.0.1 website.com
Use the name of website which you want to block in the place of website.
for example if you want to block facebook just type the following two lines.
127.0.0.1 www.facebook.com
127.0.0.1 facebook.com
Step 3: Save the file and just reboot your system for browsers other than IE will not block the site but once you reboot you will find that site completely blocked in all the browsers. Some times restarting a web browser doesn't work so better reboot and try.
So these three steps will help you to block any sites which you want them to be blocked. so no need to fight with some software's, routers, firewalls etc. Remember the path of the file which I have mentioned in the 1st step because if you want your site to be unblocked you need to delete that particular site in the hosts notepad save it you can access it now no need to reboot. You can add multiple number of sites to be blocked in this manner. so start preparing a list of sites which you fell to be blocked.
